THE OKAS EXPERIMENT

A digital platform to gather, share knowledge, & discuss ways to sustain our planet

The echo network is a social innovation partnership with the specific focus of establishing trust between sectors, increasing the value of science for society, and instilling a sense of responsibility in everyone for our human and environmental ecosystems.

Initiated by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India in 2019, our current key supporters include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Hindustan Unilever Limited,, RoundGlass,, the Biodiversity Collaborative, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF). Our National Hub is hosted by the Nordic Centre in India, and our International Hub is hosted by the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV), in close collaboration with the Danish Innovation Center in India (under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research).

SUSTAINABILITY AMBASSADORS GLOBAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM (SAGE)

A real world sustainability boot camp

Our program includes an ambitious three-tiered training and engagement program for undergraduate students from local communities in India (Junior Ambassadors), an international summer school for graduate students (Senior Ambassadors), and a PhD-level training program (SAGE Fellows). These three training elements are designed to leverage existing knowledge, innovations, and community connections within the echo network through our deliberate, collaborative approach known as ‘Communities of Practice’ .

"Leveraging the power of a ‘network effect’ is critical to catalysing and mainstreaming urgent actions required to improve quality of life - from clean air to building resilience against climate change impacts. As we continue to work together, kudos to the Echo network for your stewardship in nurturing communities that inform, act, and care - and for fostering a culture of listening to each other rather than just talking past each other."

I firmly believe that research should not only be well grounded in science but the solutions it provides should also be rooted in the immediate society. Thus the philosophy of Echonet in preparing young researchers to identify problems for their research from their immediate neighbourhood and find solutions that are pure science drew me to it. As a Science Communicator I felt that Echonet provided a sound platform for researchers to reachout to the society in a better way. I thus got involved in training the Young Ambassadors on communicating science to non-scientists. Speaking to the young ambassadors of the project has been a revelation of the energy, the out-of-the-box ideas and enthusiasm of the gen-next, the hope for a better and sustainable future.

To me the echo network is a place of hope, understanding, and action. It is a platform that connects and engages passionate people across many fields with the natural world around us. As a trainee in the SAGE program, I was given the opportunity to not only witness critical real-world sustainability challenges and their consequences, but to work as part of an awesome diverse and interdisciplinary team of young scientists to develop real solutions. This experience has greatly impacted my perspective on sustainability, health, and equality, and continues to shape who I am as a researcher and person. I am so happy and fortunate to be a part of this inspiring and motivated network and look forward to many continued collaborations and successful projects.
